Each month we will highlight one of our talented stallholders. The December stallholder of the month is...

Jenny Brown of Pansy, Fern and April

Tell us a bit about Pansy, Fern and April.

I make dolls house dolls, sets of dolls like storybook sets and animals. They are all made using a technique of wrapping wool around pipe cleaners so the result is bendable and durable. I also do all of the packaging myself and include little poems that I write with some sets. I sell at markets, online and to shops.

How did it all begin?

My Mum and I have been making and selling things for as long as I can remember. I used be a Home Economics teacher and an embroidery teacher & project designer for a magazine. I'm also a qualified illustrator. Mum used to make these type of dolls and I could see an opportunity to develop the idea and add packaging etc. I started selling them about five years ago.

What's the story behind the name?

My business name was chosen as I could see a chance to have an interesting name- better than a rather drab colour! There were three of us in the business back then- me, Mum and my Belgian shepherd dog (whose input was mostly in moral support!)

Where are you based?

I work from home at New Norfolk. I moved here at the end of last year when I returned to Tassie after spending six years in Adelaide. I used to live near Cygnet before that.

What do you love about what you do?

I like making all the different characters and watching them develop. There is always a new one I can think of!

What inspires you?

The little kids that fall in love with them.

What do you do when you're not creating for Pansy, Fern and April?

I make dolls most of the time but also love walking my two dogs, Vincent and Lottie.

What do you enjoy about selling your wares at markets?

Seeing all the people who love the dolls and love to buy them for their kids and grandkids.

Do you have a useful tip for new stallholders?

Make sure you love making what you're making because if it takes off you may have to make a heck of a lot of them!

How can people contact you?

I have a website where people can see and buy my products, and a blog where people can find stockists, market attendances and new products.
